Howdy there S.T.E.M. Folks!Afrosteminism to me means inclusivity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematic fields of study.
Whether you are reading this as a first-year student at Whitman College or from somewhere else, welcome to the S.T.E.M. fields!
My name is Elizabeth "Liz" Meador, I am an alum of Whitman College's Physics and Astronomy department. I created this site to provide resources and survival tips for underrepresented groups in S.T.E.M. fields. This site includes a collection of tips and terms to describe some of what you may be feeling, testimonials, resources, opportunities, and a greater perspective on the work you're doing. For underrepresented groups (Womxn, POCs, FGWC, LGBTQ+, etc.) launching into a career in the scientific fields can be daunting especially if you feel isolated in the field and/or have little reference as to how higher education functions. There are challenges that you may encounter during your journey in college and beyond, but it is important to understand your own ability to succeed, which is honestly a life-long process. |
More than anything else that you take away from this site, it is important for you to know that you have a place in your field of choice. You can come into your field having no experience or you may be the only person of color in your classrooms, but that fact doesn't mean you don't belong. You belong here and are capable of succeeding!
